Dress Coat

If you come to my house for a visit, I will always ask if I can take your coat but then I'll just turn around and hang it on the banister...wanna know why? My front closet is full...embarrassingly full of my coats. No one else's...just mine. There is no possible way I could fit yours in there. I know that I could purge the collection but then how could I call it an obsession...?  I have mentioned my coat obsession way back in year one of my blogging journey....some things never change!

Cause here I have gone and made another one. A good one if I do say so myself.... I love this fabric!

For this coat, I  used Burda 6772.  I love the design of this coat but like many others...found the instructions lacking. I was also lacking some much needed sleep at the time so that didn't help but I did manage to get through it.

I'm not a fan of a CB seam but wanted to ensure a good fit so I did my best to print match. I'm pleased with the result.

I opted to used self fabric covered buttons and large snaps. Bound button holes would have been ideal but I desperately wanted this coat to turn out and the possibility of me messing them up was highly likely at the time. Sometimes you just have to play it safe.

I chose a black Kasha lining. I think I have mentioned my love for this lining before when I used it  in my McCalls 6656 coat. This flannel backed lining adds warmth without bulk, perfect for a dress coat.

Me Made IRL... so I thought that I would start sharing some pictures of how I style and wear my me mades in real life. Jeans, heels, tunic and a little sparkle.

  1. Wow. Just wow. Great looking coat! How does that kasha lining hold up over time/washing? Or do you only dryclean coats? (I'm a toss everything in the washer kind of gal myself. ;-) )

    1. Thanks! I think that as long as you pretreated the lining before you made your coat (wash and dry) you would be fine. I always dry clean coats though. Too much work for me to risk it.

    1. Thank you. I don't find pattern matching too bad as long as I have purchased more than enough fabric. It's a nightmare when I have skimped!

  3. You look lovely in your newest coat. The fabric IS beautiful. Is it a wool brocade? An excellent colour choice for you, IMO!

    1. Thank you! The color is what attracted me to it. I wouldn't say that it's wool, a poly blend....many times the fabric store here sells pieces that are labeled "unknown fibres" so it's a guessing game sometimes.

  10. what a beautiful coat! I really love the deep pleat in the skirt at the back. Very chic. I love making and wearing coats too, it's just a little sad that the climate here just doesn't call for them all that often!

    1. Thanks Carolyn! Hmmm.. I'm not sure that I would be sad about your climate! I will admit that I do love the different seasons we have. Keeps things interesting but by February 2.... my view on it starts to waiver!

  14. that coat is so pretty. Love the red. and that is a great pattern. I think Burda wins the coat contest - they have so many cute coat patterns through their whole size range.

  17. It's gorgeous, as are you. Love the fabric (where do you source such nice stuff? - we don't have great fabric stores in France so any advice would be greatly appreciated) and I suspect you'd be able to wear a brown paper bag and look good. Found your blog a few weeks ago and really enjoy seeing what you make. When I eventually get the opportunity and time to get back to my sewing I can be sure I'll be inspired by some of your lovely makes - keep up the great job.

    1. Thanks Chris!! I don't think that I can be much help to you because I don't have any experience with online shopping. I shop primarily at a large Canadian fabric chain and they don't ship worldwide. Boo. I hope you find the time to get back to sewing soon!

  26. Oh Margo! This is so very you! As always, impeccable sewing, and your fabric choice is gorgeous! And good 'ol Burda. I love many of their designs, but one does need to read between the lines when constructing.

You know...your signature style is so recognizable. I'm always a little in awe about that. I tend to make random choices and then wonder why did I choose this pattern or this fabric...all after I've sewn it of course. You are inspiring me to try and be more selective and thoughtful! xo

  28. What a gorgeous coat Margo! Print, style, fit, all just perfect! There are times I'd be interested in purchasing fabric online but a big part of the fun for me is going in a store and eyeing up the beautiful fabrics in person (plus I know what I'm getting). Oh, I picked up the latest Vogue issue with your interview! So cool to see you featured!:)
